The Coopertown stop for this year’s installment of Experience Robertson County is St. Michael’s Church. Nestled in the rural landscape of Robertson County, St. Michael’s Church has served as a spiritual and community hub for over 150 years, providing a place of worship and gathering for its parishioners. Located in Coopertown near Cedar Hill, St. Michael’s is the oldest Catholic church in continuous operation in the state, with roots dating back to the early 1840s. Originally built by four founding families who purchased land from the Wessyngton plantation, the church began as a modest log cabin in 1842, serving as a key stagecoach stop between Nashville and Clarksville. Over the years, the church expanded, adding a bell tower in 1942 and receiving several structural enhancements.
Recognizing its significant role in the heritage of Middle Tennessee, Robertson County, and Coopertown, St. Michael’s was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. St. Michael’s continues to operate as a mission of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Springfield, preserving its rich heritage for future generations.
