Residents Urged to Voice Concerns and Sign Petition Opposing Mixed-Use Development
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen (BOMA) will convene on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at 6:00 PM at Coopertown’s Pleasant View VFD Station #5 . The controversial rezoning request for the 48.5-acre parcel adjacent to Oak Pointe is on the agenda for a first reading.
The developer is requesting the parcel be rezoned from Agricultural (AG) to Mixed Use Residential Commercial (MURC), allowing for both commercial development and higher-density residential housing—potentially including apartments, townhomes, and retail space. This parcel directly borders established residential neighborhoods and sits along arguably town’s busiest corridor – Highway 49.
This proposal has sparked significant concern among Coopertown residents over its potential impact on traffic, infrastructure, emergency services, taxes, and the town’s rural character.
Petition Launched to Oppose Rezoning
In response, a group of concerned citizens has launched a town-wide petition urging the BOMA to deny the rezoning request and preserve the current Agricultural zoning for the property.
“This isn’t just about one neighborhood—this is about all of Coopertown,” said one organizer. “We believe in responsible growth that fits our town, not development that will overburden our infrastructure and change the nature of our community. This is a pivotal moment for Coopertown—our voice matters. The Mayor and current board members all ran on the notion of responsible growth, and the community has been very clear on keeping Coopertown country.”
The outcome of this rezoning decision could have long-term implications for the town’s growth, infrastructure, and identity.
Residents who oppose the rezoning are encouraged to sign the petition here:
