Petition to Surrender Coopertown City Charter Fails Again
For the third time in recent history, a petition to get the question of surrendering Coopertown’s city charter on the ballot has failed. Just as in 2000 and 2004, there were not enough signatures to qualify the measure for the upcoming November election. Mayor Becca Werner announced that the Robertson County Election Commission confirmed the ballot has been set without the charter revocation question, noting the petition was not submitted by the deadline.
Despite this repeated failure, proponents of the measure are expected to push for a special election. The line they use in attempting to obtain signatures goes like this: “Let the citizens vote and decide,” However, it’s clear that the community has consistently rejected attempts to dissolve its local government, reflecting a commitment to maintaining Coopertown’s autonomy and ensuring decisions about its future remain in local hands.
Mayor Werner remains hopeful, stating, “It is time to move forward together and make this town an even better place to call home.”
